Cases of Polio in Nigeria after being declared Polio free

The World Health Organization expressed earlier in the year that Nigeria was Polio free after no new cases of Polio after 2 years. The news came a few weeks ago in Nigeria when two children were reported to have Polio and as a result experienced paralysis.

The next step for the Nigerian Government is to reintroduce immunization into the community especially within the affected areas as directed by the Director of Polio eradication at WHO Headquarters, Dr. MichealZaffran.

Investigations and genetic sequencing of this re-emergence of the virus shows that the new cases are strongly linked to the wild poliovirus strain, which was detected in Borno state. Community involvement and operation centres are getting involved to respond well to the outbreak.
